February 2010

HELLO EVERYONE:

I was looking the other day for inspiration for this newsletter and came across our Feb 2006 newsletter. The newsletter had just been written after our first ever San Martino winery trip which was a cruise through the Gulf of Mexico and western Caribbean. As soon as I saw the picture on the right my memory was flooded with wonderful images of that trip. I have enjoyed each winery trip and can’t wait until April of this year when we take our annual outing of fun, exploring and enjoying new wines, places and people. As I look at this first picture it is remarkable the large number of the original members of that cruise that are still going with us on our annual treks. I guess they still like us!

This year our adventures will take us to North East Spain to the land of Catalonia and the city of Barcelona for three days and then a seven day cruise (WindStar Cruise Line) to Rome with a couple of more days of exploring Italy.

During this trip we will go to wineries, dine in caves surrounded by centuries of traditions, explore one of the most beautiful cities in the world and then relax in a cruise ship that is absolutely fabulous! We are taking with us about 50 of you and if you get the urge there may be a cabin or two left. During the cruise we will drink San Martino wines (and others too) and one night San Martino's winemaker will work with the ship's chef to prepare a special dinner for all on board to be paired with San Martino wines. The best part of these trips is not the place or the wine but the people we get to know better and enjoy the comradely of being fellow travelers and explorers with many of them becoming life-long friends. We enjoy every minute of these trips!

If we miss you this year… don’t worry! Soon we will post the 2011 adventure which will recreate the original 2006 cruise leaving in a bus from the winery and relaxing for 7 days cruising through the Caribbean. Stay tuned…

Wine Futures

If any of you purchase Reserve Cab, Zinfandel or Syrah Reserve futures, please come to the winery to pickup your order. It is ready! At this point we are not offering any additional wine futures but later this summer we will be tasting the Malbec and making a decision about pre-selling part of it.

Stuff Happening the Last Week of January

Stuff Happening in February

Each month we work very hard to listen to your recommendations and to have events that you can enjoy and relax while having a good time with friends and fellow oenophiles. Here is what we are "cooking" for the month of February. Please remember that some events have limited capacity and sell out quickly.

Feb 5. Southwestern Style Chili after 6:30 until food runs out

Feb 6: Wine for the Misinformed. We will host a special evening of education and great fun for wine novices and anyone that thinks that wine selection is complicated. We will discuss the basics -- finding wines you like, getting the best value, and serving and storing wine at home. This unique approaching to enjoying wine includes lessons in wine vocabulary and identifying subtle flavors. As part of the evening we will view videos on wine, discuss what is being presented and taste six different wines as we move along a light and fun way of approaching the world of wine. Guaranteed to take the fear and snobbery out of wine! Reservations are Required.

Feb 12. Manhattan Clam Chowder after 6:30 until food runs out

Feb 13 and 14: Valentine's dinner sold out very fast. But we have a special offer if you wish to bring your Valentine to the winery on Sunday Feb 14. (Reservations are required). During the hours of 1 to 4 pm and for a price of $76/couple you and your significant other will get:

1. Two glasses of Reserve Sparkling Wine

2. Chocolate torte with chocolate rum sauce and truffles

3. One bottle of Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon 2006 ($32 value)

4. Two logo glasses to remember the occasion

5. A rose for the ladies.

Feb 19. Bring a picnic and join the winemaker in the tasting room

Feb 26. Release Day of Reserve Syrah 2006. Bring a picnic, taste the new Syrah Reserve 2007 and enjoy the company of other oenophiles.

Feb 27. Nouveau Tempranillo Festival (Jazz & Wine). The French have their Beaujolais festival which marks the release of young wine and we will do it Texas style with Tempranillo from our vineyards. Using Bordelaise methods we made a wine that is young, fruity and refreshing that is ready to be enjoyed now. Un-oaked, fermented using Carbonic maceration and from the 2009 harvest, this is a wine to be enjoyed while very young and in a glass tumbler like they do in the old country. So we will celebrate like the winemaker did while growing up in the village of San Martino. That is... drinking young wine from glass tumblers, good friends surrounding you and outstanding Jazz with the Jackson-Carter Trio. Bring a picnic and you get to keep the tumbler!  Reservations are Required. Limited capacity event. Cost $15/person includes glass of Nouveau Tempranillo, the tumbler, a taste of the new releases (Cab Res 06 and Syrah Res 07) and the Jazz concert.

Other Stuff

The first Wine Club Member Release of 2010 will take place March 4th. We are working on the selection of wines but join us for a club social from 3 to 5 Sunday March 7th.

As the events in your life turn and whirl around you, much like the wine you swirl in your glass, doesn't it make you feel good to know we are still here, making wine and that you are held fondly in our computer's excellent memory? Indeed, while you have been caught up in the swirling events that make up our life and swept into a different orbit, we have stayed grounded in our little winery, continuing to make outstanding wines of extraordinary color and character to national applause. I thought this would be a nice opportunity to bring you up to date on new releases and unabashedly tell you about some wines we are releasing Feb 27th during the Noveau Tempranillo Jazz Party and that you may want to consider for your personal cellar or... just to drink with your significant without worrying about cellaring the bottle because you know we will make more.

Cabernet Reserve 06. Opaque, inky color is followed by concentrated aromatics of lush black fruit, graphite, coffee, dark cocoa powder, licorice, and cola syrup. The dense flavors and balanced tannins integrate beautifully for a long, layered finish.

Syrah Reserve 07. Full bodied deep purple-red with wonderful rich aromas of black currant, black berries and blueberries with hints of cassis fill the nose. On the palate this wine offers luscious intense flavors of blackberry fruits, peppery plums with a hint of oak followed by a long lingering finish.

Petit Syrah 06. This is a big, mouth filling wine with heady aromas of blackberry preserves, raspberries, cassis and chocolate followed by a long finish on the palate with faint hints of cedar and tobacco.

Zinfandel - Cucamonga Valley: Released December 09

As always thank you for support and Love, enjoy life, stay healthy and drink San Martiño wine... thank you!
